Don't forget the roles of the other two M's in the "7 M's of manufacturing" - Measurement and Management. Without good benchmarks and accurate metrics to "lean" out the process, measurements during manufacturing could be either superfluous or not comparable.  Management needs to understand and support continuous improvement in leaning out processes and support any resulting automation and MES systems proposed for operations that are truly required. Following on to that, management needs to quickly respond and resolve alerts, statistics and data put out by MES automation, e.g., trace-ability, non-conformance detection, and equipment failure or PM alerts.   Integrated MES and automation go hand-in-hand and the LEAN processes should show where those MES touch and feedback points are.
