EXPLOSIVES AND ENERGETIC AUTOMATION

It is critical to handle pyrotechnic materials in a safe manner. Setpoint eliminates the potential for injury to the operator in the event of an unplanned ignition.  Setpoint’s experience in handling energetic automation includes weighing, filling, and assembly of parts with explosive materials.  Each position has an error proof part orientation system to ensure all parts are placed accurately and no energetic material is dispensed incorrectly.

 

Weigh, Fill and Assembly of Energetic Automation

High Energetics Loading and Assembly StationSetpoint has created combination machines that precisely weigh and fill a pyrotechnic powder into a cup and then apply a cap sealing in the energetic materials, all in a cycle time of less than 4 seconds.  The raw cups are automatically fed to the dial table where they are tare weighed prior to entering the pyrotechnic powder loading station.  After they are filled, the cups are weighed again to ensure the correct amount of energetic material was placed into each cup during processing.  By having the scales mounted onto isolation bases, the common vibration interference is eliminated.   Post fill processes include a cup capping station and a roll seaming process to join cup and cap into a single unit.

The powders are contained in a single "blast stack" to eliminate potential hazardous situations to the operator.  Pyrotechnic Automation of loading through a vibratory feed bowl & track system, and off load of parts through a pneumatic pick and place system, are monitored through a PLC and displayed on an operator interface terminal.  Through the on/off load automation, one operator is able to safely monitor the entire machine.

Setpoint worked closely with a customer to develop new processes for handling pyrotechnic material while still wet.  This allowed the safety risks to decrease since it is not as volatile in a slurry state.

Several phases of production are included in these lines, including pyrotechnic powder loading, non destructive testing (Real Time Radiography), and drying and curing stations.
